Top Positive Body Image Campaigns We Love: Part 1
Body positivity and promoting a healthy body image is our mission at Inspire Psyche Terry: that’s why we make our lingerie line size-inclusive, ranging from Small-4X because we truly do believe that everyone deserves to be inspired. Period. This is so much more than just a mission statement, though. To emphasize just how important and impactful the concept of body image is, check out these statistics! According to DoSomething.org, “Approximately 91% of women are unhappy with their bodies and resort to dieting to achieve their ideal body shape. Unfortunately, only 5% of women naturally possess the body type often portrayed by Americans in the media.” Those numbers sound pretty discouraging, which is why we take our mission so seriously and take any chance we can get to celebrate women of all body types and others who are also carrying out the same mission as we are. So, lest you be discouraged, there have been a number of recent campaigns and events that have recognized this issue and are seeking to do something about it. Here are a few that we LOVE and think are doing a great job of declaring women’s freedom from body shaming and stereotypes!
- The Sports Illustrated 2017 Swimsuit Edition:
Sports Illustrated may not have a great track record of being the most body image-friendly magazine. However, this year, they chose to highlight an array of different women and body types, ranging from athletes, like Serena Williams, to 61-year-old Christie Brinkley to plus size newcomer Hunter McGrady. According to Glamour magazine, McGrady is “the curviest model ever to appear in the magazine” and is not taking this opportunity lightly. She’s using every chance she can get to speak out to women and encourage body positivity. She’s quoted as saying, “Women, for anyone who has ever felt uncomfortable or insecure because of rolls, or stretch marks, or cellulite, or acne, or felt like you didn't measure up because you weren't represented in the magazines—THIS IS FOR YOU!" She goes onto speak about the importance of spreading this message and inspiring others: “You are STRONG. You are powerful and together we need to lift each other up and inspire one another. There's too much going on in this world to let each other fall by the wayside." We couldn’t agree more, and we’re glad to know that we’re not alone when it comes to inspiring others!
